There were several key issues decided in the 2013 Georgia municipal elections. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed cruised to re-election with an overwhelming victory. Some of the Atlanta Board of Education races, however, were so close as to necessitate a runoff election. With the Atlanta Public School cheating scandal and the necessity to appoint a new superintendent, the results of these runoffs will have long reaching consequences.
In Gwinnett, the SPLOST was renewed for another three years. The SPLOST is a 1% sales tax. It is projected to generate $498 million, 70% of which is earmarked for transportation projects. Dacula, Palmetto, and Morrow all approved Sunday alcohol sales.
In Johns Creek, Mayor Mike Bodker eked out a 58% victory amid a controversial investigation. Bodker is currently being investigated for possible ethics violations and going beyond his authority under the city charter. The investigation was launched by the City Council, using an independent investigator. It is yet to be seen whether this narrow re-election will serve to bridge the rift between Mayor and Council, or drive the two further apart.
