In the U.S., 35 million men and 21 million women experience hair loss. By age 35, 40% of men have noticeable hair loss. Hair loss treatment is a $7 billion global industry, with people spending $1.87 billion annually on hair loss surgery alone. People don’t like going bald.
Luckily, a new scientific breakthrough might just provide salvation for the hair impaired. A new study published in the journal Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences found a new technique which may make it possible to generate new human hair on human skin. Current treatments don’t create new hair follicles but instead slow the loss of hair follicles or stimulate the growth of existing hairs. The new technique might make it possible to multiply cells in a lab dish and then transplant them to a person’s scalp in order to generate new hair.
