Details of donations to the Clinton Foundation have emerged and raised a lot of questions for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her husband, former president Bill Clinton.
The Clinton Foundation is a non-profit organization that raises hundreds of millions of dollars each year for the stated mission of “[strengthening] the capacity of people throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence.” But donors to the foundation are under a lot of scrutiny, particularly those from foreign countries. This is because donations from foreign countries to the Clinton Foundation could allegedly be tied to influence on United States government policy while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State.
The most recent example of these pay-to-play allegations was reported in the New York Times. It unveiled the investigations by Peter Schweitzer in his forthcoming book “Clinton Cash.” Among the revelations of Schweitzer’s investigation is a potentially explosive scandal involving the sale of uranium resources to Vladimir Putin. The sale was approved by Hillary Clinton’s State Department at the same time that the company which Putin purchased made a $200 million donation to the Clinton Foundation. Furthermore, Russia at the time paid Bill Clinton $500,000 to give a speech in Moscow.
The investigation into deals such as this and others is turning into yet another partisan issue. Some people seem willing to defend the Clintons at the expense of honor and integrity simply because they are Democrats. This is not exclusive to Democrats but certainly serves as the most glaring current example of such behavior.
Why do we defend dishonest people, throwing our own integrity and morals in the trashcan, in order to defend our political parties?
The foundation of our country will be undermined if we create a society where it is okay to cheat or buy the system; it undermines our rule of law and the moral fabric of our society will fray. Our entire system is based on the concept of integrity. Unfortunately that appears to be eroding, and the American people aren’t even paying attention.
It is important that we recognize the value of integrity, apply the laws equally and justly, and fight for America’s values and not just those of a particular political party.
