In a recent B.B.C. interview, Oprah said that she thought that some, if not much, of the opposition to President Obama is a result of racism. “There's a level of disrespect for the office that occurs,” she said, “and that occurs in some cases, and maybe even many cases, because he's African American. There's no question about that and it's the kind of thing nobody ever says but everybody's thinking it.”
Oprah is mistaken in at least one aspect. Many people have said it, and continue to say it. A Harvard study contends that Obama lost 3-5% of the vote due to racism in 2008. A recent C.N.N. Obama approval rating poll lines up almost perfectly by race. The real underlying question is whether whites are against Obama because of his race, or if blacks are more predisposed to favor Obama because of his race.
